Stifling defense leads to Radfordโs fifth conference win
RADFORD, Va. โ The Radford menโs basketball team used stifling defense and held a Hampton team that averages 41.0 percent shooting to just 38.7 percent in a 76-65 win on Tuesday night inside the Dedmon Center. It was the Highlandersโ first lead since the early minutes of the game. Jeffers had 14 first half points, which set a career-high, topping his previous of 12. He ended the game with 16 points on 5-of-5 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and four free throws. He finished the game with 14 rebounds and 13 points, picking up his second career double-double.
Early run by East Carolina pushes Pirates over Highlanders
GREENVILLE, N.C. โ A first half run by East Carolina erased a nine-point Highlander lead and the Radford menโs basketball team was unable to come back falling 63-50 on Saturday afternoon in Williams Arena. After the dunk, the Pirates scored nine in-a-row and pushed their lead to 29-21 with a 19-2 run over 8:20. The Highlanders scored six of the final eight points of the first half and cut the deficit to four, 31-27. Stat of the GameRadford outscored East Carolina, 26-22 inside the paint, but the Pirates scored 17 points off Radfordโs 14 turnovers. Radford shot 37.5 percent from the floor and shot less than 20 percent from beyond the arc.
Gardner leads East Carolina past VMI 80-68
GREENVILLE, N.C. - GREENVILLE, N.C. (AP) - Jayden Gardner scored 28 points as East Carolina topped VMI 80-68 in a season opener on Tuesday night. VMI led 45-44 when Kamdyn Curfman hit a 3-pointer with 16:22 remaining but Gardner scored the next seven points for East Carolina and the Pirates led the rest of the way. Tristen Newton added 20 points for the Pirates and Brandon Suggs scored 12. Greg Parham scored a career-high 23 points for the Keydets. East Carolina faces Navy on the road on Friday.
