Current weather conditions and recent storm activity
ROANOKE, Va. – Temperatures in the 30s...with thunder and lightning!!?? That’s exactly what happened last night for some of us. Even though it’s dry now, don’t put away those umbrellas yet. Popcorn showers and thunderstorms have been spotted along the Cumberland Gap, particularly around the Kentucky-Virginia border and points west, so there is still the chance for some widely scattered showers and a few storms this evening into the overnight.
Upcoming weather predictions for the week
Friday is shaping up to be mostly sunny but look for clouds rolling back in just after sunset. And by midnight Friday night, we will have more passing showers to contend with...and the higher elevations may see some freezing rain mixing in too. The weekend kicks off wet a times on Saturday morning, though clearer skies could break through by the afternoon. And Sunday looks nicer with more sun in the forecast. So, the wettest part of the weekend looks to be later Friday night through about lunch-time on Saturday. With a weak wedge in play, temperatures on Saturday will be held down into the 40s, but by Sunday we are right back into the 50s.
Temperatures next week look colder. Temperatures will mainly be in the 30s and 40s. And we will be unsettled too. Although late Sunday night and early Monday may see a little wintry mix, we should quickly changeover to a plain (cold) rain in most areas throughout the day Monday. This could change so please stay tuned. At this point, the wintry weather potential appears to be a bit higher on Tuesday for everybody, as another storm system heads our way. We may get a little break in the precipitation on Wednesday, only to have more rain enter on Thursday. An active weather pattern is certainly on the way.
