SALEM, Va. (AP) - Charles Harris rushed for 181 yards and Galax's lone touchdown and Riverheads failed on a 2-point conversion pass on the game's final play Saturday, preserving the Maroon Tide's 7-6 victory and first Virginia High School League 1A state football championship.

Harris carried 28 times and finished with 3,236 yards for the season, the second-best single season in VHSL history. His touchdown came on the opening drive of the game for the Maroon Tide (11-4), and the Galax defense did the rest, stifling the Gladiators until the final minutes of the game.
