ROANOKE (WSLS) - The Roanoke City School system is celebrating five years of working together with the VH1 Save the Music Foundation.

Since 2009, the foundation has donated $510,000 worth of instruments to the schools.

Patrick Henry High School student Dylan Francis says he's thankful for what the foundation has done for him.

"It really has inspired me personally just to recognize all that we've done as a city for music I know that a lot of cities don't have the opportunity," says Dylan Francis, Patrick Henry High School senior.

In addition, all 17 elementary schools have some sort of Save the Music program.

Country music star Hunter Hayes was in Roanoke for a celebration concert at the Berglund Civic Center where 450 student musicians performed.

"It's pretty phenomenal to see something like this because this is just heads and shoulders this is multiple levels above what I even thought was possible," says Hays.

Superintendent Dr. Rita Bishop says the foundation has even given the opportunity to some students who may never have gotten the chance to play.
