BEDFORD (WSLS) - Lynchburg's Commonwealth's Attorney says there will be no charges against the deputies, who shot and killed a man as he was attacking his estranged wife. The incident happened on Teass Terrace Road in October.
The Attorney's report says officers responded to the Bedford home after a 911 hang-up call. When the deputies arrived, they found blood on the floor and heard screams coming from the back yard. They found Richard Bergeron with an axe in his hand and his arm around Doris Bergeron's neck.

When officers told Richard to drop the axe, he threw Doris to the ground and charged at the sheriff's. The deputies then shot and killed him.
One deputy went to treat Doris, while the other two went to check on Richard. They attempted to revive him using CPR, but Richard had died shortly after the gunshot. Doris was taken to the Lynchburg General Hospital where she was admitted.
Doris gave a statement the next day. She said Richard stabbed her and poured gasoline over her and tried to light her on fire. The lighter didn't work after several times of trying.
Doris says she would have died had the deputies not arrived when they did.
