Charges filed in Rt. 220 bus crash incident

ROANOKE COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Charges are being filed against a Roanoke man after a Roanoke County school bus and a Red Cross bus were involved in an accident on Route 220 Wednesday evening. 

Anthony Wayne Parks, 49, of Roanoke is charged with passing a stopped school bus, which is a form of reckless driving. Parks was the driver of the American Red Cross vehicle, which hit a Roanoke County School bus.

Roanoke County Fire & Rescue crews, along with Police units were dispatched to the 6000 block of Franklin Road at 4:27 p.m. for a reported bus accident. When the first units arrived on scene they reported that a rear-end collision had occurred between a Red Cross bus and a Roanoke County school bus. The school bus was taking students home after school.

There were eight students on board at the time of the accident and six of them were transported to local hospitals.  

A representative with Carilion Clinic said most patients seen there suffered bumps and bruises. Their ages range from 12-15-years-old. 

Neither of the drivers were injured.

Both North bound 220 lanes were closed for about an hour. South bound lanes were closed for approximately 20 minutes so that five ambulances could access the scene.

All lanes of Rt. 220 reopened around 6:20 p.m.

A representative for Roanoke County Public Schools say leaders could look into whether or not bus stops need to be changed on Route 220 in the future.
