ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - Appalachian Power announced Wednesday they're introducing a new outage alerts system.

They say the new system allows customers the option to be notified by text message or email when their home or business is affected by a power outage.

Customers enrolled in outage alerts will receive a notification when outages have been reported in their area and will continue to get updates as Appalachian crews determine the outage cause and predict when power is expected to be restored.

Officials say by visiting their website here and logging into their account, customers can enroll in power outage alerts and modify their specific notification preferences.

Appalachian Power has approximately 1 million customers in Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee (as AEP Appalachian Power).
