Man charged with second-degree murder in Franklin Co. shooting

FRANKLIN COUNTY (WSLS 10) - A Ferrum man is charged with second-degree murder after investigators say he shot his friend in the yard of a residence Thursday night. 

The Franklin County Sheriff's Office says Randall Neil Hodges, 48, of Ferrum, Va., is charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The incident happened at 8:08 p.m Thursday, May 14 at a home located along Holley Dr., approximately one mile outside of Rocky Mount. 

Upon arrival, deputies say they encountered Hodges in the yard of the residence. Deputies also located the body of Kevin Scott Smith, 42, of Rocky Mount, Va., in the yard. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

Hodges was taken into custody without incident. Deputies say Hodges was in possession of a firearm at the time of his arrest. 

Investigators have determined that Hodges and Smith were known to be friends prior to the shooting.
