DANVILLE, Va. (AP) - A Danville woman says she was frightened after the floor inside her home collapsed beneath her.

The Danville Register & Bee reports Deborah Miller Mckague says she was putting clothes in her washing machine Monday when she fell through a hole that suddenly opened up in her floor.

She managed to pull herself out of harm's way.

Mckague's husband, Frederick "Freddie" Mckague III, who purchased the home in 1992, says he knew there had once been a well in the area where the laundry room is located, but thought it was safe with a concrete floor covering the former well that had been capped.

Deborah Mckague says they determined the drop into the former well was at least 40 feet deep.

The couple contacted the city inspections department to examine the problem.
