Kevin Green, WAVY – VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) — Robert Ryan McDonnell, son of former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, was sentenced to six months suspended sentence for a DUI charge.

The sentence was handed down after McDonnell entered an Alford plea, which is not an admission of guilt, but is an acknowledgement that the prosecution has substantial evidence against you.

The Virginia Beach Commonwealth's Attorney's Office confirmed McDonnell's sentence Thursday, along with a $250 fine and a one-year suspension of his operator's license.

McDonnell was found guilty of DUI and refusing a breathalyzer last November. He was arrested in Virginia Beach in December 2014 for driving under the influence.

A refusal charge was deferred for one year. If McDonnell complies with the above conditions, and does not incur any additional DUI or traffic offenses, the court could dismiss the refusal.

The return date for that charge is April 7, 2017.
