The plane went down near the Tupelo Airport shortly after taking off.

The city's police chief says the plane is a Beech Bonanza single-engine, six-seat aircraft registered to a company in Texas.

The police chief says he believes the accident may have been caused by a mechanical issue.

The pilot had reported smoke in the cockpit, the FAA said.
