NBC Olympics.com – Kassidy Cook competed in her very first Olympic event this week, when one poor semifinal dive prevented her from qualifying for the women's individual 3m springboard final.

The smiley, 21-year-old Olympic rookie has already dealt with plenty of adversity.

She and synchro partner Christina Loukas missed out on qualifying for the 2012 Games by 0.42 points. Then she sustained a 360 degree tear to her labrum and had surgery the day of the London Opening Ceremony. Four years later after qualifying for the Rio Games, Cook fell 3.90 points shy of qualifying for the final and her first chance at an Olympic medal.

"Thanks everyone for all the support! Obviously not the performance I dreamed of but still gonna keep it OG at the OG's," Cook tweeted. "(Original Gangster at the Olympic Games)"

Despite failing to qualify, Cook still showed up for the final in good spirits in order to show support for teammate Abby Johnston.

"You have to support your teammate and your country," Cook said as a spectator at the final. "Even though I'm not in this final and it's kind of hard to watch, I want to be here to support her and the United States."

The second youngest of six children, Cook will return from the Rio Games to attend Stanford University. And you can bet that we haven't seen the last of her.

Speaking with NBC's Kelli Stavast on Sunday, Cook was asked if we can expect to see her competing in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

"Yes, ma'am, you can," she responded with a smile.
