Virginia Warn Notice: Layoffs to affect 69 employees in Salem

Cardinal Logistics employs 4,000 people in the U.S. and Puerto Rico

SALEM, Va. – A trucking company is shutting down a location in Salem and laying off 69 employees. A spokesperson for Cardinal Logistics says the layoffs begin Dec. 2.

The company had a deal with Kroger in west Salem. The spokesperson says the customer is moving to a different provider and Cardinal Logistics will no longer be at that location. The spokesperson says Cardinal Logistics management is working with employees to get them moved either within the company or helping them get connected to other companies.

Cardinal Logistics is based in North Carolina and employs 4,000 drivers and staff in the U.S. and Puerto Rico.

A Virginia Warn notice alerted the layoffs to the public Tuesday. Per federal regulations, companies have to give notice of upcoming layoffs for 500 or more employees, or for between 50 and 499 employees if they make up at least a third of the employer's active workforce.
