Norfolk Southern lays off dozens of Roanoke workers as part of 'new strategic plan'

ROANOKE, Va. – Norfolk Southern has laid off dozens of people at Roanoke's Shaffers Crossing facility, according to a spokesman for one of the labor unions that represents workers at the railroad.

Documents provided to 10 News show about 42 workers were let go effective immediately Tuesday.

The laid-off workers reportedly include 20 electricians, 14 machinists and eight other positions.

Below is the statement from Norfolk Southern:

Norfolk Southern continually focuses on ensuring that we have the optimal number of people and assets at every location across our system in order to operate efficiently. As we execute our new strategic plan, we expect that targeted hiring and furloughing will remain components of our operating model to drive service and shareholder value. Today, that entailed the furlough of approximately 45 employees in our Roanoke shops. Those employees may have the opportunity to pursue positions elsewhere on the NS system.
