Winter weather leads to widespread power outages across Central, Southwest Virginia

Thousands will start their Sunday in the dark. Appalachian Power reports more than 2,000 customers without service as of 5:45 a.m. Sunday.

There are pockets of outages all across Southwest and Central Virginia including areas in Roanoke City/County and near the North Carolina border.

Officials with AEP told 10 news Saturday the wintry system and high winds were the cause of thousands of outages in the area.

Thousands are without power due to wintry weather that hit much of Southwest and Central Virginia early Saturday morning.

At this time, Appalachian Power is reporting more than 5,000 outages across its coverage area.

Below are the worst outage areas among the 5,158 Appalachian Power customers in Central Virginia and Southwest Virginia as of 5:30 p.m.:

  • Grayson County - 902
  • Bedford - 482
  • Roanoke City - 418
  • Roanoke County - 387
  • Franklin County - 369
  • Pulaski County - 298
  • Carroll County - 220
  • Henry County - 218
  • Patrick County - 216
  • Bland County - 196
  • Montgomery County - 178
  • Buchanan - 86
  • Floyd County - 20
  • Amherst County - 11
  • Giles County - 5
  • Lynchburg - Fewer than 5

Here’s a breakdown of the Dominion Energy customers in our region without power:

  • Halifax County - 298
  • Campbell County - 16
  • Alleghany County - 6
  • Charlotte County - 2

Here’s a breakdown of the BARC Electric Cooperative customers in our region without power:

  • Highland County - 1
