Man involved in multi-county manhunt set to appear in court in mid-November

He was wanted for 20 days in Craig and Montgomery Counties, authorities say

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Va. – A man arrested in late August after a multi-county manhunt is set to appear in court in mid-November.

As we’ve previously reported, police say 42-year-old Shawn Tolbert was involved in a police chase that began in Botetourt County and ended in a crash in Craig County.

The search for the wanted fugitive lasted about 20 days before police safely took him into custody in Dublin after receiving a tip.

On Tuesday, Oct. 4, Tolbert made a video appearance in court for a pre-trial hearing. While there, his defense requested that he undergo a mental health evaluation for competency and sanity when the offense was committed.

Officials say the motion was granted by a judge and Tolbert must now be evaluated. Therefore, the matter will be reviewed in mid-November.

Tolbert is currently facing the following charges, according to court records:

    • Two charges of assault on a law enforcement officer/DOC person,
    • Falsely identifying himself to law enforcement,
    • Obstructing justice and resisting arrest,
    • Trespassing
    • Obstructing justice and resisting arrest.

Court records show that he is scheduled to appear in the Craig County General District Court on Nov. 17 at 9:30 a.m.
