Alleghany Highlands Public Schools announced Wednesday evening that Callaghan Elementary will be closed on Thursday, Nov. 3, and Friday, Nov. 4, due to a high number of probable flu cases.

Leaders say they consulted with VDH staff and that the closure is out of an abundance of caution.

We’re told school employees started to deep clean earlier in the week and all other AHPS schools will be open.

This comes just days after 25% of the student body at Lord Botetourt High School was out sick with the flu.

Andrew Lewis Middle School in Salem has also seen a slight uptick in health-related absences, as we reported.

In early October, health experts warned of a harsh flu season ahead.
