Renovations begin on Christiansburg High School

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The Montgomery County School Board just broke ground for renovations to Christiansburg High School.

“It’s definitely needed,” said Bernard Bragen, the superintendent for Montgomery County Public Schools. “We want to provide the learning spaces that are appropriate for our staff and students to be successful and in addition, we’re going to increase the capacity in that school to have a few more students as well.”

The project was approved back in March of 2022.

Officials from the school said they have been preparing for this day since the initial approval,

“We’re going to have a premier learning institution for the 21st century and that is really exciting,” said Bragen. “We are really proud of it.”

After the renovation, officials from the school said it would be a shell of what we see today.

“It will, in effect, be a brand-new building,” said Bragen.

Bragen said the updated school will be a great representation of the community.

“Our schools are a showcase for our community,” said Bragen. “They’re the center of the hub where people come to meet.”

He said the nearly $100,000,000 renovation will create new classrooms and increase capacity to 1,600 students.

Bragen also reassured parents that safety is the top priority.

“Safety is going to be at the forefront of what we do and even though the building will look open and welcoming to students there will be safety features you will not always see,” Bragen said.

Bragen said he expects the renovations to take two and a half to three years to complete.
