With winter in full swing, many are heading to the slopes and enjoying other winter recreational activities in our area.
The U.S. Forest Service has released some safety tips for those looking to enjoy some outdoor winter activities this year.

The service says recreationists should always have these 10 things on them: Navigation, insulation, illumination, emergency shelter, first aid supplies, water, fire, repair kit and tools, nutrition and a form of communication.
The service also recommends dressing in layers when enjoying outdoor winter activities. You should have the following:
- A hat to keep your head warm.
- A scarf or knit mask to cover the ,face and mouth.
- Sleeves that are snug at the wrist to keep water and snow out.
- Mittens or Gloves (mittens are warmer)
- Water-resistant coat and shoes.
- Several layers of loose-fitting non-cotton clothing.
The Forest Service also has the following safety tips for skiers and snowboarders:
- Always wear a helmet designed for skiing or snowboarding.
- Protect your skin and eyes from the sun and wind. Apply sunscreen and wear ski goggles that fit properly with a helmet
- Make sure your boots fit properly and bindings are adjusted correctly
- Prepare for the weather. Wear layers of clothes and a helmet liner, a hat or a headband.
- Do not ski or snowboard alone
- Follow all trail rules
- Stay on the designated trails
- Only go on trails that match your skill level
- Take a lesson - even experienced skiers and snowboarders can benefit from a review
- Before using a ski lift, tow rope or carpet, make sure you know how to get on, ride and get off safely. Ask an attendant if you need help
