Danville PD arrest wanted man without incident after he barricaded himself in apartment

DANVILLE, Va. – The Danville Police Department arrested a wanted man Tuesday evening after he barricaded himself in an apartment.

According to Danville PD, 32-year-old James Wells refused to surrender for more than five hours.

Wells, who was wanted on seven different criminal charges, was spotted by members of the Danville Police Department at 3 p.m.

According to police Wells fled into an apartment building located in the 100 block of White Street.

Wells refused to leave the apartment he had entered and talked to officers from a distance before he made attempts to flee through two apartments and accessed the roof system. Multiple attempts were made to communicate over a five-hour period.

After hours of de-escalation attempts Wells surrendered from an attic area with no force necessary in his arrest. The incident included patrol, investigation, SWAT and assistance from the Danville Fire Department.

Wells was served warrants for the following

  • Felony burglary
  • Felony larceny of a firearm
  • Felony possession of a firearm by a felon
  • Misdemeanor assault and battery on family members
  • Misdemeanor trespass
  • Misdemeanor destruction of property (2)

Wells was transported to the Danville City Jail.
