Man found dead after chase in Henry County

Chase began 9:30 Thursday night

HENRY COUNTY, Va. – Virginia State Police, the Martinsville Police Department, and the Henry County Sheriff's Office are investigating after a man was found dead in a wooded area Thursday night.

A vehicle with an unknown number of passengers fled from a checkpoint set up by the Martinsville Police Department, according to the Henry County Sheriff's Office.

There was a brief chase, where cars reached speeds of 85 mph, but officers lost sight of the car.

After finding the vehicle abandoned near the Patriot Centre Industrial Park, officers set up a perimeter and began searching the area.

Lieutenant Colonel Steve Eanes with the sheriff's office said, "They were looking for the driver of the vehicle and anyone that might have been in it, and around that area, they heard a single gunshot in the wooded area behind us."

After about an hour of searching the woods deputies found a man dead.
