Virginia Tech hosts Women Leaders in College Sports event

‘If you see it, you can be it’

BLACKSBURG, Va. – On Thursday night, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team hosted the Duke Blue Devils. While it was all about the competition on the court, some Virginia Tech students had to chance to collaborate before the game with Duke University’s Vice President and Director of Athletics, Nina King.

Virginia Tech and Women in College Sports collaborated to host an open forum discussion in front of dozens of women. The goal? Empower voices for women in sports.

“It’s great any time where I can come and talk to women and hopefully inspire at least one person in the audience,” King said. “To let them know, if you see it you can be it. There are not enough people who look like me doing what I do. So, that was really one of the big reasons why I wanted to be an athletic director - to be in a position to be able to help create change for people to come with me.”

In 2021, King became Duke University’s first female and first person of color to become athletics director. She’s also one of three female athletic directors in the Atlantic Coast Conference, along with Carla Williams of Virginia and Heather Lyke at Pitt.
