Charlie Hebdo terror attack suspects go on trial in Paris
Those on trial in Frances terrorism court are accused of buying weapons, cars, and helping with logistics in the January 2015 attacks. French authorities ended a phone tap on one of the Kouachi brothers a few months before they stormed the editorial offices. Her client, Ali Riza Polat, is accused of serving as the link between the Kouachi brothers and Coulibaly. Patrick Pelloux, a Charlie Hebdo contributor who missed the editorial meeting the day of the killings, said he had been dreading the trial. There is also in France the freedom to blaspheme, which is attached to the freedom of conscience.___Angela Charlton contributed from Paris.
French paper attacked in 2015 reprints Muhammad caricatures
The January 2015 attacks against Charlie Hebdo and, two days later, a kosher supermarket, touched off a wave of killings claimed by the Islamic State group across Europe. (AP Photo/Thibault Camus, File)PARIS The French satirical paper whose staff was decimated in a violent attack by Islamic extremists in 2015 is reprinting caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad cited by the killers, declaring "history cannot be rewritten nor erased." The announcement on Tuesday came on the eve of the first trial for the January 2015 attacks against Charlie Hebdo and, two days later, a kosher supermarket. Charlie Hebdo, which was then little-known outside France and regularly caricatures religious leaders from various faiths, republished them soon afterwards. Eleven days later, the unlikely hero was granted French citizenship.
