CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – A long line of cars drove through the New River Valley Wednesday to honor former Christiansburg Rescue Squad Captain Kelly Walters. After nearly an hour-long service of Kelly Walters’ favorite melodies and a montage of his career at Auburn Baptist Church, friends, family and rescue squad members paid their respects at his final resting place. But even the drive over was a touching one for Walters’ cousin, Rogers Walters. “From the church to the cemetery all along the road people were pulling off to honor Kelly,” Rogers Walters said. RINER, Va. - The Riner Volunteer Fire Department now has a new place to park its firetrucks. The Fire Department officially opened its new fire station along Route 8 on Thursday evening. The new facility was first planned in 2014, but the department did not purchase the land needed for the new station until 2016. Riner's new fire station is nearly 20,000 square feet, which is double the size of its previous home. The Fire Department's old building will eventually house the Riner Volunteer Rescue Squad.

RINER, Va. - Some local firefighters will soon have a new place to call home. Work on the new station for the Riner Volunteer Fire Department is nearly complete. Montgomery County Emergency Services Coordinator Neal Turner said the new station has been about four years in the making. "There's a lot of internal work going on: final painting, lights, receptacles, cabinetry in the kitchen and some of the work rooms and things of that nature," Turner explained. The station is expected to be complete by early fall.
