Heads up! Flood watch issued for many on a rain-soaked Labor Day

We expect the wettest zones to be Roanoke, the New River Valley and the Highlands

ROANOKE, Va. – If you’ve gotten your morning started early, you’ve probably noticed just how damp it is! Showers rolled through the area overnight and are with us to kick off the holiday.

After sunrise, we expect scattered showers to persist for much of the morning. The rain could turn more widespread and we may even hear some rumbles of thunder by afternoon.

It’s not a total washout of a day, but you should have the umbrella with you just in case a shower or storm moves over your area.

We expect the highest chances of rain and the heaviest totals in the Roanoke Valley, New River Valley and Highlands.

This lines up with the area that the National Weather Service (NWS) has put under a flood watch until 11 p.m.

While Tuesday and Wednesday won’t be as wet as today, scattered storms are still possible.

The best chance at drier days comes Thursday and Friday as a cut-off low sinks to the south. We’re still quite humid as a southerly flow pumps moisture in.

Here’s how rain chances look this week. We go from 60-80% chances today to just 20% by Thursday and Friday.

The weather pattern could turn active again this upcoming weekend. At the moment, we have scattered storms in the forecast for both days.
