Get ready for a rainy mid-week in Southwest and Central Virginia!

A low-pressure system brings changes

ROANOKE, Va. – This Monday evening finds Southwest and Central Virginia under relatively calm conditions, but don’t be fooled—changes are on the horizon. A low-pressure system from the west is set to bring rain to our area starting tomorrow.

What's happening with the weather?

The current lull in the weather, with some cloud cover, is temporary. By tomorrow, rain is expected to begin intensifying in the late afternoon after about 3 to 4 p.m., continuing through the night into Wednesday.

Potential for mountain snow

While rain is anticipated for most of us, the precipitation may change to snow in the mountains later on Wednesday. As temperatures begin to drop, expect to see snow showers in the NRV and Highlands. That’s where a light accumulation is possible. Farther east, towards the Piedmont, a few flurries will be possible before the cold front pulls away.

Temperature fluctuations are on the way

Current conditions

It was a pretty warm start to the work week for us. Tonight, expect partly cloudy skies and a low of about 45 degrees. Some areas might also see fog, so please be careful traveling first thing in the morning. And temperatures on Tuesday will above average reaching the upper 50s and low-to-mid 60s.

Midweek chill

On Wednesday, temperatures will begin mild but will start dropping pretty quickly, falling from the 50s down into the 30s and 40s. This drop in temperature accompanies the passing front, so prepare for colder conditions from Wednesday afternoon through Friday.

Looking forward: Sunshine with cooler days

What's after the rain?

Once the front moves past our region, high pressure is projected to bring clearer skies by Thursday and Friday. While sunshine will no doubt return, a northwest flow is expected to keep temperatures cooler, staying in the 30s and 40s.

The weekend outlook

Looking ahead to the weekend, temperatures may start to moderate, potentially reaching back to the 50s by early next week. While Thursday and Friday should remain dry, there’s a chance for a few showers over the weekend. As of now the best chance for isolated showers this weekend looks to lie on Sunday.
