DOWNTOWN ROANOKE (WSLS 10) - The number of apartments in downtown Roanoke is expected to nearly triple this year compared to five years ago.

Back in 2010, there were 441 units and this year the number is expected to be about 1,200.

One of the newest apartments is Railwalk Apartments on Warehouse Row available for move-in next month. It was originally an old warehouse for groceries. The developer saw a need to transform the building after seeing his other properties in downtown fill up quickly.

"This is my passion," says John Garland, developer. "I love doing this sort of thing. I love seeing old buildings being transformed into something new and bringing a new life in it. This building has been empty for decades and so it's always a thrill to see an old building to be filled with people."
