shows almost three-fourths of people see white and gold, while the rest see blue and black.

Optometrist Dr. Timothy J. Schwach, from Amherst, explained the picture on News 4's Wake Up.

"It's a visual perception thing," Schwach explained. "It has to do mainly with how we perceive the images that come into our eyes. My personal belief it has to do with background lighting compared to foreground lighting, and how that light bounces off the subject we're looking at."

"Color blindness is a whole different thing," Schwach said. "This is just mainly how we perceive the image."

According to the original owner of the dress, it's royal blue and black. However, different lighting can cause people to see the colors of the dress differently. The main cause has to do with the quantity of light that comes into your retina, which can be different for everyone.

News 4's Facebook post about the dress received hundreds of comments overnight, and even celebrities are tweeting about it.

Taylor Swift said, "I don't understand this odd dress debate and I feel like it's a trick somehow. I'm confused and scared. P.S. it's obviously blue and black."

Kim Kardashian said, "What color is that dress? I see white and gold, Kanye [West, her husband] sees black and blue, who is color blind?"
