However the attorney general's office and the college's attorney are working to protect Sweet Briar College's charitable assets and say Amherst County attorney Ellen Bowyer is getting in the way.
Bowyer claims the college violated the law in its move to close down the school and the will of Indiana Fletcher Williams who left behind her estate to establish the women's college.
"The college must come before this court and petition to follow the laws of the will," says Bower during court.
It's the will that alumnae like Tracy Stuart say should be followed before making decisions that would affect the school.
"I feel that Sweet Briar has a legacy of 114 years and created by a powerful woman in memory of her daughter," says Stuart.
She and nearly a dozen other alumnae showed support by wearing the college's colors and Save Sweet Briar buttons during the hearing.
"I believe the current leadership have led the problems that we have I think that the issues can be overcome," says Dawn Martin, alum of Sweet Briar.
Evidence will be presented Wednesday morning in Bedford County Circuit Court.
