Motorcyclist killed in Campbell County crash

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Va (WSLS) - Virginia State Police (VSP) are investigating a fatal two-vehicle crash in Campbell County. According to officials, the crash occurred Saturday at 11:20 a.m. at the intersection of Timberlake Road and Powhatan Road. A 2007 Harley-Davidson FLS motorcycle was traveling west on Timberlake Road when a 2010 Mazda-3 pulled out from Powhatan Road onto Timberlake Road and struck the motorcycle.

Both the motorcycle's driver, Lewis M. Smith, 71, of Lynchburg, Va., and passenger, Anne H. Smith, 70, of Lynchburg, Va., were thrown from the bike. They were both wearing helmets. They were both transported to Lynchburg General Hospital. VSP Officials said Mr. Smith passed away from his injuries overnight. Mrs. Smith is still being treated for serious injuries.

The driver of the Mazda, Abigail R. Whelan, 20, of Forest, Va., was transported to Lynchburg Memorial Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The crash remains under investigation and charges are pending.
