"Smith Mountain Lake Strong" honors Vicki Gardner

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE (WSLS10) – As the community continues to heal from the tragedy that claimed the lives of WDBJ7 journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward, they are working to honor one of their own who was injured in the tragedy.

The fundraiser is called  "Smith Mountain Lake Strong." The event will raise money to honor Vicki Gardner who was shot during the shooting.

Organizers said this is their way to move on from the incident.

"You want to be scared and you hide or you go I want to do something and take action and that's what we wanted to do we decided to take action," Angela Byrne one organizer said.

She is currently recovering at Carilion Roanoke Memorial hospital.

On Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. at the Kroger at Westlake Town Center at Smith Mountain Lake, the community will hold a barbeque fundraiser.

Kroger donated a half rack of ribs to the cause which will be sold in exchange for a donation. Drinks and cake will also be served.

A raffle with prizes donated from local businesses including  Bridgewater Marina, Mango's, SML Chamber Wine Event, Haywood's, Sugar & Slice, Capps, Queen Bee Marketing,and more.

Gavin Hager who knew Vicki Gardner is glad to see so many people coming together after the shooting that claimed the lives of Alison Parker and Adam Ward.

"It's great being out here today to see all the people here to support Vicki," Hager said.

Organizers said they raised nearly $4,000 at the event.

The event even has a hashtag, #smlstrong.
