CAMPBELL COUNTY (WSLS 10) - Region 2000 Services Authority is making changes to help makes the Livestock Road landfill less smelly.

"It's like no other substance on this planet," says Jon Hardie, neighbor. "It smells like gas or chemicals."

Hardie moved near the Livestock Road landfill about a year ago.

"I never thought any odors or any problems would ever come from that landfill half a mile away through woods and trees in the countryside," says Hardie.

Complaints started coming in when it became a regional landfill serving Lynchburg, Campbell, Appomattox, and Nelson Counties in 2012.

Region 2000 Services Authority is spending over $1 million on odor control and odor mitigation additions this year. One of those is a vapor system which sprays out a chemical to neutralize smells.

In addition to mask the smell, Region 2000 Services Authority is constructing a full-scale landfill gas collection system which is expected to be finished by the end of this year.

"Although we're operating under our permit requirements we want to voluntarily put in these systems and improve the existing systems we have," says Clarke Gibson, Region 2000 Services Authority director.
