UPDATE: Police arrest man after he brandishes a gun during traffic stop

UPDATE :

ROANOKE CO. (WSLS 10) -A man is arrested after brandishing a weapon at an officer during a traffic stop.

Commander Short with the Roanoke County Police department says it began during an attempted D-U-I traffic stop on 419 around 11:30 Saturday night.

An officer pulled a vehicle over near the intersection of Rt. 419 and Stoneybrook Drive in Cave Springs.

Police say as the officer approached, the driver presented a gun. The officer immediately retreated to call for back-up.

Multiple officers arrived and tried to make verbal contact with the man, who police say was holding the gun to his own head.

After police made multiple attempts to get the driver out of the vehicle, Roanoke County SWAT was called in.

After firing one shot and hitting himself in the thigh, the suspect got out of the car, dropping the gun on the ground.

When he reached for the handgun, police say they fired two bean bag rounds.

Officers then arrested him. The man was then taken, by ambulance, to Roanoke Memorial Hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time.

There is no word yet on any charges.

Authorities say the officer involved never discharge his weapon.

The incident was handled by Roanoke County Police with assistance from Roanoke City officer and Roanoke County Fire and Rescue.

The investigation is ongoing.
