The public bus system that services Martinsville and the southern portion of Henry County now has three buses instead of two.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held Thursday for the new bus.

Some new stops and a new route have been added as well.

The new bus and routes have been in place for about two weeks and a representative of the company that manages the buses said the changes are already proving worthwhile.

"The first few days, we didn't have very many riders, but we're already up to 20, 25 a day," RADAR regional transit director Nathan Sanford said.

"The expanded service itself is growing by leaps and bounds. We were averaging 85 riders last month (and) we're already in the one-teens with the new service."

Sanford said additional buses and routes will be considered in the future as necessary.
