Man charged after Amherst County deputy shot during traffic stop

Deputies returned fire, injuring the suspect.

State police have charged an Amherst County man after a deputy was shot in the head. 

Trevor D. Ewers, 22, of Monroe, is charged with one count of malicious wounding of a law enforcement officer, one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony and one count of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Ewers has had previous drug and robbery charges dating back to 2014. He was booked for driving under the influence two weeks ago, according to Amherst County Adult Detention Center booking information. 

The deputy is "doing great" and is at home recovering, according to the sheriff.

Ewers is being treated at Lynchburg General Hospital for injuries that are not life-threatening. 

State police are handling the investigation. 

ORIGINAL STORY

An Amherst County Sheriff’s Office deputy was shot in the head during a traffic stop Friday night, officials said. The shooting happened around 11:30 p.m. at the Monroe Post Office in Amherst. The deputy is expected to recover. 

During the traffic stop, the passenger in the vehicle showed a handgun and shot one of the deputies in the head. Another deputy returned fire, hitting the suspect who fired first, the Amherst County Sheriff’s Office said.

The deputy was treated and released from the hospital, officials said.The suspect is still being treated.

The Sheriff’s Office has asked the Virginia State Police to investigate the officer-involved shooting in accordance with the Office’s policy.
