51-year-old identified as Smith Mountain Lake drowning victim

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office said a man who died after drowning at Smith Mountain Lake Monday has been identified.

According to authorities, the man was identified as 51-year-old John Lewis of Portland, Oregon.


UPDATE

A man is dead after he drowned at Smith Mountain Lake, according to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said crews responded to the area near the 400 block of Channelview Drive in Moneta just before 10 a.m. Monday.

When crews arrived, they said they found an unconscious man in the water near a dock. The man was later pronounced dead despite extensive life saving measures.

The man’s body has been taken to the medical examiner’s office in Roanoke and the investigation will remain active pending official autopsy results. Authorities said there doesn’t appear to be any suspicious circumstances at this time.

Authorities are not releasing the victim’s name at this time out of respect for the family.
