Virginia Tech students participate in day of service for MLK week

ROANOKE, Va. – A group of Virginia Tech students wrapped up the university’s MLK week in Roanoke, learning about the city’s black history and performing community service.

The day of service and learning included a neighborhood clean-up and the placement of signs to raise awareness about the number of homeless students currently in Roanoke City public schools.

They also toured the historic Gainsboro neighborhood. Organizers said that was important, as many students are not from our region.

“So we wanted our students to be able to come down, to learn about this community, to learn about its impact on Roanoke overall and to be able to give back to a community that’s sowed seed for them.”

Tanya Rogers, Assistant Director, Black Cultural Center At Virginia Tech

There was also a tribute to renowned poet and Virginia Tech professor Nikki Giovanni who died in December.
