ROANOKE, Va. – The Carilion Clinic is expanding its maternity care by adding midwifery services.
Previously these services were only available in the New River Valley. Now teams are accepting patients in both the Roanoke and Rocky Mount areas.
Besides maternity care, certified midwives do it all, from routine checkups for teens and adult women to post-menopausal care.
Additionally, midwives offer hospital births with expert care and medication options during labor and delivery.
“And many of the folks who are joining our team are originally from this area. So expanding our ability to have midwifery-led care by people who live in the community is also a benefit to us. We’re attracting great candidates,” Tina Johnson, Director of Midwifery Services at Carilion Clinic, said.
Leaders say they have five midwives in Roanoke right now and two more will join the practice in the coming months.
