ROANOKE COUNTY Va – Major changes are coming to intersections along routes 220 and 419 in the Roanoke Valley. Dozens of people packed the South County library tonight to learn about VDOT’s new project.
Crews will add a diverging diamond at the 220- 419 interchanges.
They’ll also improve signal timing and reduce congestion at other intersections by adding “thru cuts”.
Some people we talked with said they’re ready for the change but worry how the construction will impact their daily lives.
“So anything that alleviates that back up, which I think is really dangerous, people come flying down 419 at 50 miles an hour, and then suddenly it’s all backed up,” said Tim Albaugh, a local resident. “I’m more concerned about people driving on our road through the neighborhood to avoid the construction. That’s the reason I came to the meeting today.”
The construction won’t happen all at once. Crews will work in phases.
The first phase will see changes to intersections along 220 at Southern Hills Drive and Pheasant Ridge Road.
The work is expected to wrap up in the fall of 2028.
