ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Just like commuters and residents, Roanoke County officials want to see the completion of projects in and around Tanglewood Mall sooner rather than later. It is likely Tanglewood Mall will look a lot different, the roadway will see major upgrades, and new businesses will pop up. Roanoke County officials met with business leaders Thursday as part of a virtual forum. The Roanoke Regional Small Business Development Center spoke during the call saying they, “can help you determine what is right for you for space consideration in your business. As well as help you with business plans and market research.”The Small Business Development Center helps businesses with 250 employees or less.

Carilion Clinic eyes fall opening for Tanglewood Mall pediatrics center
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – Carilion Clinic said it expects its massive project at Tanglewood Mall to be complete by August and to be open to patients by October. Dr. Donald Kees is the interim chair of pediatrics for Carilion and said things are shaping up. “It’s all framed in and they’re putting the drywall on, the plumbing and the electric,” Dr. Kees said. It’s also a dream for an economic development director such as the one in Roanoke County. Roanoke County is set to host a virtual forum on Tanglewood Mall on Thursday at noon.

Chipotle, Blaze Pizza and more coming to Tanglewood Mall in 2022
ROANOKE, Va. – Tanglewood Mall is getting a delicious upgrade in 2022. Officials announced Wednesday that four new restaurants and a new dentistry will be making their way to Electric Road starting this year. Among those businesses are Chipotle, Panda Express, Blaze Pizza, Jersey Mike’s and Aspen Dental. Two new buildings, which will be home to those fives businesses, will be constructed along Electric Road in front of the new Carilion Children’s, which is where the former JC Penney was located. Blackwater Resources said construction will begin March 2021, and tenants will begin opening these new businesses at the start of 2022.

Tractor-trailer crash caused delays on U.S. 220 South in Roanoke
ROANOKE, Va. – UPDATEThis crash has been cleared, according to VDOT. ORIGINAL STORYDrivers should expect delays on U.S. 220 South in Roanoke on Thursday afternoon. A tractor-trailer crash is causing traffic near Southern Hills Drive and Tanglewood Mall. As of 5:41 p.m., all southbound lanes are closed and traffic is backed up about 2.5 miles, according to VDOT. Traffic is being diverted onto the Wonju exit.

Work to improve busy Roanoke County interchange starts next week
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. A project four years in the making to improve a busy local interchange is about to begin. On Monday, work will start on the southbound side of Route 419 near Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke County. Drivers can expect shoulder closures and nighttime lane closures on Route 419 throughout the duration of this project. There will be, also, some impacts to the businesses along that stretch of Route 419 at nighttime, Bond said. VDOT and the contractor will work with businesses along the road during the construction to help them mitigate the impact of the work.

Woman found carrying dead baby at Tanglewood Mall appears in court
ROANOKE, Va. A Roanoke woman who police say they found at Tanglewood Mall with a dead baby in a shopping bag appeared in court on Thursday. 34-year-old Mandy Lacy has been charged with felony assault of a police officer and public intoxication. In court, the Commonwealth requested a competency evaluation, which Lacy fought. According to the warrant, the dead baby was found wrapped in a jacket in a small grocery bag that Lacy had been carrying. Authorities requested Lacys DNA in order to determine if the dead baby was her child.

Police request DNA to confirm woman carrying dead baby at Tanglewood Mall is mother
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – UPDATE 7/21, 4 P.M.A warrant from the Commonwealth of Virginia reveals that investigators want to collect DNA from a woman who was found carrying a dead baby at Tanglewood Mall on Sunday to determine if she is the child’s mother. Authorities requested Lacy’s DNA in order to determine if the dead baby was her child. Roanoke County officials said Tuesday that the baby’s body was partially decomposed, making identification difficult. Detectives are now waiting for the medical examiner’s results, according to Roanoke County officials. SUNDAYAccording to Roanoke County Police, charges are pending for a woman after authorities say she punched an officer at Tanglewood Mall.

Motorcyclist was involved in a hit-and-run crash before a deadly crash, police say
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – The 26-year-old Roanoke man who died in a motorcycle crash on Thursday afternoon was involved in another crash not long before he died, according to police. Prior to either crash, a Roanoke police officer saw a motorcycle speeding while going south on U.S. 220, according to the Roanoke Police Department. The officer lost view of the motorcycle and a short time later police were alerted that Ryan Alouf was involved in a deadly crash near the Tanglewood Mall. Prior to that crash, when Alouf exited U.S. 220 at Electric Road, police said he hit a car waiting at the red light, got back on his bike and continued onto Electric Road before crashing into a Chevy SUV about a quarter mile down the road. Neither a traffic pursuit or stop was initiated by the Roanoke officer, according to the police department.

26-year-old dies after motorcycle crash near Tanglewood Mall
ROANOKE COUNTY, Va. – A 26-year-old Roanoke man died in a motorcycle crash on Thursday afternoon. Ryan Alouf was driving a Suzuki motorcycle north on Electric Road when he ran the red light at Elm View Road and hit a Chevy SUV entering the intersection, according to police. ORIGINAL STORYTraffic on Electric Road is being detoured after a motorcycle crash near Tanglewood Mall on Thursday afternoon. Emergency crews are at the scene and have the road closed in the southbound direction from Elm View Road to Ogden Road. Traffic is being diverted onto Elm View Road.

End of an era: Tanglewood Mall marquee comes down
ROANOKE, Va. – “I really felt sad,” Vicky Nelson said about the Tanglewood Mall marquee coming down. As people walked in and out of the Tanglewood Mall on Tuesday, they couldn’t help but notice the crane rising above the mall’s giant marquee. “I began shopping here at Tanglewood Mall for many, many decades. “I do hope that it will be renovated and we can come here for shopping for many years to come," Nelson said. Malls provide rain-free trick-or-treating experience amid storms
ROANOKE, Va. - The rain on Halloween night may have made traditional trick-or-treating a challenge, but malls throughout the area provided an alternative. Several malls hosted indoor trick-or-treating, including Valley View Mall and Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke, River Ridge Mall in Lynchburg and New River Valley Mall in Christiansburg. Valley View's event proved to be popular, as the mall filled up with kids in costumes looking for treats. Most were accompanied by their parents, with several of them also getting into the Hallowen spirit. "It's cool to have fun with family, while dressing up and being free, said John Lewis, who came to the Valley View Mall event in a matching Spiderman costume with his son, Elijah.

Growth around former Ukrop's offers glimpse of possible impact of new Carilion facility
ROANOKE, Va. - First Watch restaurant on Franklin Road, next to the old Ukrop's grocery store, has no trouble staying busy. McAllister said being from the area, he's glad to see Carilion's investment in Tanglewood Mall. Carilion announced Thursday plans to spend $30 million to turn the former J.C. Penney in Tanglewood Mall into a children's pediatrics center. An Earth Fare grocery store and the Mellow Mushroom restaurant have also opened up in the parking lot across from Carilion's outpatient facility in the former Ukrop's grocery store. With Carilion's new children's center in the mall, Roanoke County is hopeful that, in the near future, the 419 corridor will provide all of that, too.

Carilion to consolidate pediatric services into new center at Tanglewood Mall
Carilion is planning to consolidate its outpatient pediatric offerings into a new center in what once was JCPenney at Tanglewood Mall in Roanoke County. The pediatric services center will take up about 20 percent of the mall -- about 150,000 square feet. Representatives from Carilion, Roanoke County and the company that owns the mall were all there for the announcement Thursday. "As we came in, we decided we wanted to change this from a retail property to a mixed-use property," Abernathy said. "Not only (success with) pediatric services but other services, and looking at this as a way to deliver healthcare in the future," Dunsmore emphasized.
