Gabby Douglas: One of Virginia’s Olympic gold medalists

Born in Newport News, Virginia, Gabby Douglas is one of the many incredible Olympians that the Commonwealth has created.

In the 2012 Summer Olympics, she was a member of what became known as the “Fierce Five,” and was only 16 years old when participating. She returned in 2016 and was also a member of the “Final Five,” a team that also included Simone Biles and Fierce Five teammate Aly Raisman.

Following her 2012 Olympic run, she donated many of her personal Olympic items to the National Museum of African American History & Culture at the Smithsonian.

Douglas has earned 3 all-around gold medals in gymnastics in her Olympic career. In 2012, she was the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in all-around gymnastics. She now has her eyes on competing in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles, stating “My plan is to continue to train for the L.A. 2028 Olympics. It would be such an honor to represent the U.S. at a home Olympics,” in an ESPN interview.
