WVIR – RICHMOND (WVIR) - The U.S. Supreme Court says former Governor Bob McDonnell can remain free while they decided whether to hear his appeal.
The 4th Circuit Virginia Court of Appeals had a refused request from McDonnell's legal team for him to remain free while he appealed.

Monday, Chief Justice John Roberts issued the order to stay the appeals court ruling that would have sent McDonnell to prison for two years.
McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, were convicted of taking gifts and loans in exchange for political favors.
The Supreme Court is McDonnell's last hope at an appeal.
Prosecutors must file a response to McDonnell's application for a Supreme Court hearing by Wednesday, August 26.
Maureen McDonnell is still asking the lower appeals court to vacate her convictions or give her a new trial.
