Roanoke nonprofit donating walkers, wheelchairs to hurricane victims

FREE has collected hundreds of mobility supplies for those in need.

ROANOKE, Va. – A local nonprofit is helping hurricane victims around the world.

The Roanoke Valley's Foundation for Rehabilitation Equipment and Endowment," or FREE, has collected hundreds of donated walkers, wheelchairs and crutches over the last several weeks.

The items were taken to Danville where God's Pit Crew will later distribute the supplies to hurricane victims in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico, as well as earthquake survivors in Mexico.

"The needs for people that have disabilities have been trickling in. They're safe now but they have lost their rehab equipment and that affects every part of their daily life," said Robin Ramsey, executive director of FREE.

FREE is a volunteer-led nonprofit that provides mobility equipment to Virginians in need.
