Officer-involved shooting in Rockbridge County under investigation

ROCKBRIDGE COUNTY, Va. - Police have released the name of the alleged bank robber who died in an officer-involved shooting on Friday.

Robert Allen Morrison, 57, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died at the scene.


The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Salem Field Office is investigating after a bank robbery suspect was fatally shot in a confrontation with deputies Friday at the College Square Shopping Center in Rockbridge County.

At 10:55 a.m., the Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call of a robbery in progress at the Cornerstone Bank. 

Three deputies from the Rockbridge County Sheriff’s Office arrived at the scene and spotted the robbery suspect running behind an adjacent building. 

When the deputies challenged the man, he brandished a handgun and pointed it at them.

The deputies fired at the suspect.

Despite CPR efforts administered by emergency medical services personnel, the man died at the scene. State police are still in the process of notifying the man’s next of kin.

At the request of the sheriff, sate police are investigating the shooting.

The investigation remains ongoing at this time.
