JF's Jones, Botetourt's Harless Grab Top 1st and 10 Honors

SALEM (WSLS 10 SPORTS)- The tenth annual 1st and 10 Player of the Year banquet brought together some of the area's top football talent for a night of celebration. And the evening brought about much less stress now that the season is complete.

Washington and Lee head coach Scott Abell was the guest speaker after he taking the Generals to a 10-0 regular season. It was the first perfect regular season at the school since 1961.

Player of the year goes to Jefferson Forest speedster Navy Jones who helped the Cavs to back to back undefeated regular seasons.  He accounted for 38 touchdowns and more than 2800 total yards of offense this season.

"It's a big honor because we have a lot of good athletes in this room and went to anyone in here but I'm glad that people decided to pick me as the top player and it's a tremendous honor and I give it all up to my old line my coaches parents and the whole JF community," explains Jones.

Coach of the year is Lord Botetourt's Jamie Harless.  He led the Cavaliers to a school record season for wins and their first ever appearance in a state title game. His four-year record at Lord Botetourt is the best four-year mark in the history of the program.

Appomattox Coach Doug Smith took home the Josh Leonard courage and commitment award. He coined the "Power of One" slogan and the coach and his football team took the lead in helping the community get back on its feet after a tragic couple of months in Appomattox.   The Raiders went on to complete a perfect season and win the school's first ever VHSL Group 2A State title.
