ROANOKE, Va. – University of Virginia Director of Athletics Carla Williams announced the termination of head women’s basketball coach Tina Thompson’s contract on Thursday afternoon.

“Unfortunately, we have not experienced the kind of success this program has come to expect and deserve,” said Williams in a release on the university’s website.

Thompson had one year remaining on the five-year contract that she signed when hired back in April of 2018.

During her four-year stint leading the Cavaliers, she compiled a record of 30-63, that included just a 5-22 record this past season.

Virginia was eliminated by Wake Forest in the first round of the ACC Women’s Tournament on Wednesday.

Carla Williams also added, “I am thankful for Coach Thompson’s efforts and I wish her the very best.”
