Black bear sightings are at their peak in Southwest Virginia, but many of the bears turning up this season aren’t looking like their usual selves. A growing number of bears are being spotted without hair, visibly underweight and in poor condition — and 10 News viewers are taking notice.

A quiet night at home took a surprising turn for a woman in Bedford County this week when she came face to face with a black bear outside her window.

The Wildlife Center of Virginia announced Wednesday that they had released three Black Bear yearlings after a year of care at the wildlife center.

Ten months have passed since an orphaned bear cub, now affectionately known as “Double Green,” was rescued from a brush fire in Wythe County. Today, he stands as the leader among six other black bears at the Wildlife Center of Virginia.

A young Black Bear cub was found on the ground Sunday in Bedford County. The cub was taken to the Wildlife Center of Virginia for treatment.
