Several Virginia congressmembers are raising concerns about proposed legislation in the Virginia General Assembly that would change oversight of the Virginia Military Institute.

Just days after opposing house bill 1374, VMI Superintendent Lt. General David Furness is now backing it.

VMI has nothing to hide - that’s the message from Superintendent Lt. General David Furness. This comes as the general assembly takes a closer look at one of Virginia’s most historic - and most scrutinized - institutions.

House Bill 1377, sponsored by Delegate Dan Helmer (D–10), cleared the House with a 71–24 vote. The legislation creates a task force to examine VMI’s role in higher education.

Governor Glenn Youngkin received a warm welcome at Virginia Military Institute during its last home basketball game before winter furlough.

The hearings come as Democrats, who control the legislature, have raised concerns about what they see as interference in university autonomy from outgoing Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s office and the White House.
