ROANOKE, Va. - Two local organizations are teaming up to feed seniors in need with a relatively new program. Each box contains 35 pounds of food with staples like cereal, soups, canned fruits and vegetables, beans and milk. The Senior Food Box program started last August, sending 100 boxes to low-income seniors in Roanoke, Salem and Craig and Roanoke counties. Only 100 recipients are LOA clients, so the program allows them to reach far more people in need. A lot of people, they don't get stuff and they come and they can get the boxes, so it means a lot for them, too," food box recipient George Jones said.

Volunteering to make sure no child goes hungry, members of the Roanoke City Police Department rolled up their sleeves to help feed hungry kids. Officers volunteered at the community solutions center with Feeding America Southwest Virginia, working in the kitchen to prepare meals. September is Hunger Action Month. Hunger Action Month begins Sunday. It's a nationwide push for hunger awareness and taking action to fight hunger in our communities. Local leaders said hunger is a big problem in our area, with more than 140,000 people facing hunger. That really puts a weight on families in our area," FASWVA marketing and communications coordinator Amanda Allen said. FASWVA is encouraging you to help fight hunger during September either by organizing your own food drive or participating in one of the nonprofit's events.

ROANOKE, Va. - A local nonprofit is working to change a federal regulation that limits the number of children they're able to reach. Feeding America Southwest Virginia (FASWVA) gets federal funding for feeding programs through the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act. That includes a regulation called the Congregate Meal Requirement that demands servers watch children eat and finish meals they distribute to them. "We can document that and say, 'This child was fed,' versus obviously, if a child took that home with them, ultimately we don't know where that ends up. That's why FASWVA is fighting back, lobbying members of Congress to strike the requirement from the Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act, which is up for renewal right now.
