Late comeback gives VMI upset win in SoCon Quarterfinals
ASHEVILLE, N.C. โ Jake Stephens scored 25 points as VMI narrowly beat Furman 91-90 in overtime in the quarterfinals of the Southern Conference tournament. Greg Parham added 21 points and Trey Bonham had 14 points for VMI. Myles Lewis added 13 points. Noah Gurley scored a career-high 30 points plus seven rebounds and seven assists for the Paladins. The wins puts VMI in the SoCon semifinals for the first time since 2003.

___Boston College has postponed two menโs basketball games this week because of positive COVID-19 tests, prompting the Atlantic Coast Conference to juggle its schedule. Carolina, Dallas, Florida, Nashville and Tampa Bay have all had games postponed because of the pandemic. ___The Chattanooga Mocs have postponed a pair of menโs basketball games after a positive COVID-19 test among the teamโs Tier 1 personnel. ___The Southern Conference postponed three games because of positive COVID-19 tests within the Furman and Chattanooga menโs basketball programs. Furmanโs next scheduled game is Feb. 3 at Samford, while Chattanooga is slated to return to the court at Western Carolina the same day.
Wynn scores 5 times to lead Furman past VMI 60-21
GREENVILLE, S.C. - GREENVILLE, S.C. (AP) - Devin Wynn rushed for 102 yards and scored five touchdowns as Furman routed VMI 60-21 on Saturday. Thomas Gordon had 10 receptions for 148 yards and Sisson was 17-of-22 passing for 277 yards and the two scores. Furman took an early 15-0 lead on two 1-yard runs by Wynn but VMI responded with Reece Udinski's 45-yard TD pass to Jakob Herres and Alex Ramsey's 49-yard run. Wynn scored on two more short runs and Furman led 32-21 at halftime before blanking the Keydets (4-6, 3-4) in the second half. Udinski was 23 of 34 for 213 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for VMI.
Virginia Tech offense makes strides, but defense needs to execute after Furman
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The bye week for Virginia Tech couldn't have come at a better time after its narrow win over Furman on Saturday, 24-17. One positive takeaway from the game was on offense, and the versatility the team has in using wide receivers like Tre Turner to run the ball. It was clear Saturday that the Hokie offense had made strides, but it was the defensive side of the ball that raised questions. "It just comes down to execution, especially for this defense," defensive lineman Eli Adams said. "As a team, we improved, we made plays, we didn't really miss as [many] sacks in the backfield as we did against ODU (Old Dominion)," defensive lineman Emmanuel Belmar said.

The Paladins are consistently ranked in the FCS classification and they're running an offense Virginia Tech is familiar with. With a new coach at Georgia Tech this season, so long to stopping the Yellow Jackets triple option... and hello to Furmans'. We've had some experience with [it] at Georgia Tech." But Tech's defense has looked pretty stout and with years of facing Georgia Tech, they should have no problem stopping the run.
